Near Edinburgh a suburb was named Elwaldside, in which the Nicholas Elwald line may have taken the name from, or from the surveyed forest/woods of the region.
Since Elwald line did not insert the “i” into the name Ellot until 1650, which became a variant of the name from William de Aliot 1066, a great many variants in accordance to French-Norman convention was made of the name Aliot, of which the Elwald-Ellot line adopted ca 1650 by and insertion of an “i”.
The following shows Aliot-Eliot migration and distribution, plus a number of locations where Elwald may have emerged, plus likely emergence of the clan line.
